I will start this post with a couple of disclaimers:
1. I will be talking about toddler pee & poop.
2. I could be completely crazy. But, I don’t think I am. At least I hope I’m not.
Colin got this over the weekend and it’s a big step for our little family.
I know what you are saying, he is only 16 months old, he’s not ready to potty train. Well, I am hoping you are wrong. Let me start by saying that we are just starting this whole process. I am reading a book called “Diaper Free Before 3” so I figured, why not? Besides the fact that Luke and I both think our son is a genius (all parents think that, right?) he is already so obsessed with the toilet. If he sees me walking towards the bathroom he starts yelling ‘tee tee’ and runs towards me. He flushes the potty when I am done and claps for me – I think he has this thing a little backwards! Anyway, the point is that I think he ‘gets’ what I am doing – at least a little. If he is not wearing pant/shorts he is constantly wanting to take his diaper off.
So when we were at Babies-R-Us shopping for Jack and my mom told me she wanted to get Colin something fun, I convinced her an Elmo potty was fun. Colin really loves it – you can high five Elmo’s hand and he has cute little sayings, plus Colin loves anything Elmo. At one point yesterday afternoon Colin let out a couple of loud toots – he walked over to me and pulled on my shirt and said “I poo poo” so I checked and alas, none of the dirty stuff was there but it further convinced me now is the time to at least start introducing him to the idea of potty training. We are taking this very slow and started last night – I loaded him up with milk, water, every kind of liquid he would drink. Then I took his diaper off and let him run around. Luke was completely paranoid and I felt like a crazy person, constantly checking him to make sure he was peeing on the floor. He sat on the potty a lot (he is also obsessed with chairs) and we even got a couple of drops. I was pretty happy with that! I kept telling Luke that I just knew he had to go and it was going to be any second. Luke got tired of waiting on me waiting on Colin to pee so he took him upstairs for a bath and bedtime. Wouldn’t you know that as soon as Luke turned on the bathwater, Colin let loose. He was standing at the stair banister and I thought I heard something, but then thought I must be imagining it. I was not imagining it and neither was Luke as he cleaned it up.
So, our potty training adventure begins – my goal is to have him out of diapers by his birthday (Jan 26)….we’ll see what happens. Wish us luck, I think we are going to need it!
